faridabad| Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Faculty of Media Studies & Humanities (FMeH), Manav Rachna International University (MRIU), hosted an intensely enlightening International Conference in Association with Central Institute of Hindi, on ‘Social Media and Governance: Prospects & Challenges’ at the Manav Rachna Campus here today. Academicians, internationally and from across the country assembled to discuss and debate on the topic of the Conference. More than 50 papers were presented by Research Scholars and academicians from far and over 30 students from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi participated at the conference. While Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka, Vice Chairman, Central Institute of Hindi, Agra was the Chief Guest for the inaugural session, Guest of Honour Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat from Rajasthan University also spoke on the occasion about the pros and cons of the social media. The keynote speaker on the occasion was Prof. Nirmalmani Adhikary, Kathmandu University, Nepal. Also present on the occasion were Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Manav Rachna International University, Dr. N.C.Wadhwa; Registrar, MRIU, Prof. R.K. Arora and HOD, FMeH, MRIU, Dr Suresh Nayak among others.
Welcoming the participants, Prof. Neemo Dhar, Dean, FMeH, MRIU, said, “Social media through Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Snapchat etc has widened the understanding of the world as a global village. With revered experts presenting papers and identifying the pros and cons of social media usage, suitable guidelines will be evolved which can serve as inputs for policy formulation in future.” The participants to the International Conference came from across the world including Bangladesh, Cuba, Ecuador, Kenya, Nepal and Mongolia.
Addressing the gathering of students, Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka, said, “Social media has both its strengths and weaknesses and it is up to you as Mass Communication students to focus upon its advantages and make optimum use of its immense potential. What’s more, as passouts of this revered Institution, you will have the onus and responsibility to utilize its manifold advantages to uphold the culture, growth and development of the nation.”
Vice Chancellor Dr N.C. Wadhwa, while discussing the importance and far reaching impact of social media said, “Social media is a burning topic in the 21st century which has to be dealt with care. One single tweet can create ripples throughout social media and got the nation debating.”
The Chief Guest for the Valedictory session was well known academician Prof. M.S.Parmar, Vice Chancellor, Kushabhav Thakre University of Journalism and Mass Communication, Raipur, Chattisgarh, while the Guest of Honour was Dr Dharmendra Singh, Dean, Subharti University, Meerut.
This International Conference provided FMeH students the golden opportunity to learn and gather knowledge from eminent academicians on the increasing importance of social media and its prospects and challenges in the field.
